La Motte Wine Estate is well-known for introducing visitors to a sensational sensory experience. While its picturesque Franschhoek Valley setting is a sight to behold, guests spend their time tasting wine, dining in the beautiful Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant or being charmed by the flavours of freshly-baked bread from the farm shop. Now an extra dimension has been added for the senses to savour and enjoy – Arômes de La Motte – a range of body products, made from the ethereal oils harvested on the estate.
Made from fynbos grown organically on the estate, the Arômes de La Motte range includes a Hand & Body Lotion, Hand Wash, Shower and Bath Gel, Room Freshener, Massage Wax Candle, Essential Oil and Palm Oil Soap. The products share the attributes of the essential oils they are made of, such as the anti-septic properties of buchu, calming and anti-bacterial properties of Cape Chamomile, anti-inflammatory properties of Geranium, therapeutic and healing properties of Lavendine, the calming and anti-septic properties of Bergamot and the skin toning properties of Grapefruit oil. The products have a subtle fragrance and are nourishing natural moisturisers that are easily absorb by the skin. They deodorise, invigorate and rejuvenate.
After reviewing the quality of La Motte’s vineyards twelve years ago, it was decided that those vineyards not meeting the required standard should be uprooted and replaced with fynbos, the region’s natural vegetation that also produces essential oils. Today 12.75 hectares are planted with Lavendine, Rose Geranium, Buchu and Cape Chamomile. All these plants are grown organically and the SGS certification guarantees that no pesticides are used in their cultivation. The stems, leaves and flowers of the Rose Geranium are harvested twice a year while the Buchu, Cape Chamomile and the top flowers of the Lavendine are harvested only once a year. The 1 kg of oil subtracted from each ton of plant material is very concentrated and used in the production of the soaps and moisturisers.
Professor Aubrey Parsons, an Honorary Senior Researcher in the Department of Botanic Biology at the University of South Africa, assisted with the formulation of the Arômes de La Motte products. Not only does he have two Doctorates in Chemistry, but he also serves on the board of the International society of Cosmetic Dermatology and has also been researching aromatic botanics, fragrances and skin care cosmetics for the past 45 years.
He says: “The vision and request of this project was to appreciate the value and goodness of nature and to incorporate natural raw materials of the highest quality, so as to ensure the function and positive efficiency of the final product.”
The products were produced by well-respected and expert cosmetic manufacturer Brunel Manufacturing (Pty) Ltd.
