The 2017 La Motte Syrah contains a natural fruitiness – something that is inherent to Syrahs made exclusively from Franschhoek grapes. The Syrah vineyards on La Motte are between 10 and 30 years old, are situated between 200 and 300 metres above sea level and grow in varying soil profiles – from heavier texture sandstone and granite along the mountain slopes to sandy, well-drained soils in the valley.
To promote elegance and soft extraction, the grapes are picked ripe, but firm and are cooled overnight before fermentation takes place between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. Tanks are pumped over daily to ensure good aeration and most tanks were pressed before fermentation was completed. Maturation in 300-litre French oak barrels, of which only 30% were new, further ensures the trusted, classic style of the La Motte Syrah.
To enhance colour, texture and extraction, 15% Durif was added to the wine.
Red berries and mulberry flavours are defined in the natural fruitiness of this Syrah, complemented by Durif-derived plum flavours. A well-shaded vineyard yields fruit that contributes distinct black pepper to the profile while considered French oak maturation enhances the wine with well-integrated oak flavours. The palate has a seductive creamy texture.
The full-bodied character of this estate wine harmonises perfectly with rich, flavourful dishes, grilled food and charred flavours, game dishes (particularly those incorporating stewed fruit and sweet aromatic spice components), peppercorn-crusted steaks and barbecued meat in a sticky, sweet sauce. The wine’s abundant fruit also latches onto the sweetness of cooked fruit and vegetables such as jellies, chutneys and berry sauces. Try this versatile wine with Chef Eric Bulpitt’s charred onion and matured cheddar tart.
