Hein’s letter Winter E News

With the Western Cape encountering the worst drought since 1904, we need a very wet winter.

A Winelands winter is so underrated. Not only is it an extremely important time for the vines to be dormant and reservoirs to be replenished, this special season also has its own beauty. The bare branches of oak trees and vines are in stark contrast to the lush greens of summer, but the soft winter light paints the Franschhoek Valley in gentler romantic hues. With less foliage, the Cape Dutch homesteads, restaurants and wine cellars are also etched clearly against the backdrop of mountains and vineyards, offering an invitation to crackling wingerdstompie fires, hearty cuisine and glasses glowing with red wine.

While there is nothing as glorious as a sunny winter’s day, for this year, let’s believe that winter will be grey and rainy and that we will have reason to spend more time indoors enjoying the best the Valley has to offer.

At La Motte the winter programme includes special wine-tastings, menus, events and music to warm up to. And if you just want to relax on your own couch, make sure to get your favourite winter wine online!

Wishing you a cold and wet winter, but with plenty of warmth in your hearts and homes!
