The 2021 La Motte Vin de Joie Rose is a blend of 71% Grenache, 19% Mourvedre en 10% Syrah. The grapes are from different districts in the Western Cape. The Grenache comes from Riebeek Kasteel and Piekenierskloof while the Mourvedre comes from Franschhoek and the Syrah from Walker Bay.
The season was late due to a lingering winter and relative cool growing conditions - even until late November. A cool summer without any heat waves resulted in harvest starting 10 to 14 days later than usual. Only for the second time in twenty years, La Motte's first grapes were harvested in February only. The Grenache for this Rose was harvested on 15 February and the Mourvedre and Syrah even later.
Different terroirs are represented in this wine, The various blocks are between 50 and 600 metres above sea level covering a large stretch in latitude. The Grenache is grown partly in shale soils and the rest in sandy decomposed sandstone and shake. The Mourvedre grows in sandy decomposed sand stone with granite while the Syrah in the Walker Bay area is form harder gravely shale. The Syrah, Mourvedre and half of the Grenache are trellised while the Piekenierskloof Grenache is from bush vines. The age of the vineyards ranges from 8 to 30 years.
The Varieties and different blocks were picked and processed separately. The grapes were cooled down for one night in a cold room to release a little colour as possible at crush. The grapes were destemmed and immediately fed into a press where the free run juice drained on arrival. Only the first 600 litre of juice from a ton were used in the making of this wine. After settling the wine was racked and cool fermented in a stainless-steel tank. The wine was then blended and stabilized before filtration and bottling. Only 4000 a 6 cased were produced.
"This wine offer a delicate salmon pink colour with tinges of onion skin, typical of a Mediterranean-style rose. The nose offers subtle, but well-defined melon, rose petal and nectarine with the charming notes of Turkish delight in the background. The palatte is polished and juicy on entry, with a refreshing acidity and a lovely lingering nectarine aftertaste. Enjoy the 2021 La Motte Vin de Jose asa glass on its own or make the most of the joy this wine brings, by pairing it with the simplicity of leafy salads, delicate salmon and trout or finely sliced charcuterie. Perfect foe relaxed get-togethers and lengthy lunches."
