The name of Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant is inspired by La Motte’s admiration of South African
artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886 – 1957).
Pierneef’s adoration of the South African landscape and his appreciation of the country’s diversity are reflected in the restaurant’s focus on heritage cuisine and how it embraces cultural influences, ingredients and recipes. His European inspirations, exceptional creativity as well as pioneering efforts in the South African art environment, involving new techniques and various genres, also resonate with Pierneef à La Motte’s interpretation of the history of South African cuisine and its strive towards innovation in executing modern South African heritage cuisine.

Still celebrating South Africa’s culinary heritage, Pierneef à La Motte has a new and more relaxed format with an à la carte menu treating guests to comfort food and hearty favourites with a modern interpretation. Enjoy the beautiful Franschhoek Valley, the quiet of the farm and vineyards, the beautiful gardens as well as the spacious and secure environment of the Restaurant.
With its refined and calm ambience perfect for extended lunch hours, Pierneef à La Motte’s new food offering is fitting for the uncertain times we live in. Chef Eric Bulpitt’s menu changes frequently but focuses on favourites from our culinary heritage and interesting interpretations of comfort meals - moreish and hearty, but not without a chef’s touch! Indulge your sweet tooth with a trip down memory lane - desserts and treats from the Farm Shop revealing a legacy of nostalgic sweets in a way that charms and comforts.

The unique food styles and diverse flavours of the local cuisine have been inspired by centuries of cooking and spiced by influences from across the globe.
Dishes served in Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant are based on recipes used and modified over more than three centuries as different cultures contributed to the shaping of the local cuisine.
Originating from treasured personal manuscripts from the Old Cape, the oldest printed South African cookbooks, indigenous culinary knowledge and family heirlooms transferred orally over generations, a wealth of ideas has been gathered, representing extraordinary ingredients of the modern heritage cuisine served in Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant.
These traditions are celebrated with a seasonal menu, fresh vegetables and fruit from the La Motte sustainable gardens, the vital use of spices and herbs as well as cooking with wine – creativity of the Old Cape recreated today, for guests’ enjoyment.

With a passion for modern cuisine, acclaimed Chef Eric Bulpitt brings an innovative focus and modern interpretation to Pierneef à La Motte’s concept of heritage cuisine.
Spending childhood holidays on his grandparent’s self-sustained farm, Eric developed a love for farm to table cooking, sharing La Motte’s principles when it comes to authentic Cape Winelands hospitality, local produce and sustainably sourced ingredients.
Today, he enjoys introducing South African heritage cuisine, prepared in an inventive way and served with a modern interpretation. Guided by global standards and international quality expectations, Eric stays on top of trends and techniques.
Ardent about the experience of his guests, Chef Eric Bulpitt entertains both South African and international palates with his cooking skill and passion for food.
